Due to internal promotion we are recruiting to a Mental Health Practitioner to join our creative and dynamic Mental Health Support Team.

As an established and Trailblazer site we are able to offer a high level of supervision, training support and developmental opportunity to suitably qualified practitioners looking to begin or develop their career in early intervention mental health and wellbeing services for children and young people in schools and education settings.

You will be a qualified EMHP, CYP IAPT practitioner or qualified mental health nurse or social worker and have the drive to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people.

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mental Health Practitioner within our Barnsley MHST service. This role is a perfect opportunity to help shape the services we provide with children, young people, families and educational settings as well as develop your skills in early mental health and wellbeing interventions in groups and individually with children and young people from 5 to 18 years.

Universal services – school nursing and mental health services to school aged children and families delivering prevention and early help initiatives including screening, promotion, professionals’ training and 1:1/group support

Targeted services –early help services for people at risk of developing additional health and wellbeing needs resulting from risky lifestyle behaviours. Includes aftercare support for people finishing specialist treatment.

Specialist services – Behaviour change interventions for people needing more structured care via a range of talking therapies and prescribing services Includes applications for residential rehabilitation and inpatient detox.

About Barnsley MHST

Barnsley MHST is an early intervention mental health and emotional wellbeing service. The service delivers evidenced based interventions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health and wellbeing needs.

It is part of the Mental Health Support Team Trailblazer Pilot, which has been commissioned by the Dept for Education & NHSE following the ‘Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health Care Provision: A Green Paper’ (2017).  The trailblazer will increase the children and young people’s mental health workforce and increase capacity to support pupils.

Barnsley MHST aims to:

  • Ensure children and young people access the right early help, in the right setting removing duplication and preventing CYP/families being ‘bounced’ in-between services
  • Help children and young people (5-18 years) to manage their feelings, behaviours, thoughts, physical sensations so that they can better engage with their learning and education
  • Work alongside educational staff to embed Whole School Approaches at all levels

About the Role

The role of the Mental Health Practitioners (MHPs) is to deliver short term low intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) informed interventions for children and young people aged 5 -18 years with anxiety, low mood, common challenging behaviours, family and peer relationship difficulties, difficulty adjusting to change and transition or difficulty managing emotions in educational settings.

MHP’s will also work with Designated Mental Health Leads and other educational staff to build on and develop evidenced-based Whole School Approaches.

Working hours Mon – Fri, 37 hours per week
